The Synchronicity War is over and the Insectoid beachheads in our spiral arm have been destroyed but the aftermath of the war holds some nasty surprises for Humanity and its loyal AI allies. Somebody is messing with the human timeline. Is it the Friendlies, the Sogas, the Insectoids or a new race? This stand alone novel set in the same universe has new human and AI characters. Find out what happened to Valkyrie, Casanova, Iceman, Gunslinger and the other Rim AIs. The Retro War spans time and space in a galactic chess game with humans and their AIs as the pawns.

The Retro War eBook Dietmar Wehr

Mr Wehr is an interesting writer, and he's able to keep the excitement going, but I think he forgot a few things. As various problems kept being solved by going back in time, we lost experience. When the Synchronicity Wars concluded, Victor Shiloh had lost all that experience he had developed in fighting various battles, and developing the sentient AI's. Two AI's went back to bring humanity up to speed in learning all the technological marvels that had been invented, and how to relate to various neighbors and prepare for the insect invasion. In this book the two AI's waylay a lost generation ship, and teach them how to be prepared to save earth. This is even before Shiloh becomes a hero in fighting the wolf aliens. Nevertheless we meet the CAG all full of confidence and skill that would have come from all those battles that weren't fought. That lost credibility with me. Nevertheless, we get a happy ending by winning the war the old fashioned way. My worry is that the friendlies aren't friendly any more, and that's a problem that is eventually going to need solving.

The Retro War eBook Dietmar Wehr Reviews

Wow this is an OUTSTANDING series. Normally I despise the time-travel thing; usually its done prety stupidly. However, this is a great series; love the AIs in the story and the plotline. Its military sci-fi at its best, so whats not to love? A fast paced book, good characters, and realistic science, A+
Strap on the seat belt, you are in for a ride. The Retro War has so many twists it might help to have pen and paper to map it all out. No spoilers here, but this is a complex story, well written and a page turner in the mold of Heinlein or Asimov. Start with The Synchronicity War and watch this universe expand in size and complexity. You will not regret it!
This book could be considered the fifth installment of the Synchronicity Wars series, which I recommend reading first to set the stage for Retro Wars. The book was less about descriptions of epic space battles than it was about strategy and loyalty between humans and A.I's intertwined with time travel and time paradoxes. Definitely a good read that leaves open possibilities of more stories of the same vein.
This is separate from the trilogy but connected and ties up the loose ends of the trilogy focused on alternative time lines. The flow and editing is not as complete as the trilogy but still very worth hanging in and sticking to the end to see what is D Wehr's thoughts about a wrap-up to this space opera. If D Wehr would write more after a break, I would look forward to what he forecasts for the future of humans and AIs in this alternative time line. At any rate, I would find that interesting.
This is separate from the 4 installments of the Synchronicity War but nicely connected and ties up the loose ends of multiple and intertwined alternative timelines introduced throughout the War. I found it hard to put down, having grown to appreciate the author’s writing style and especially his practical approach to the physics involved in the navigation of the vast distances which serve as a setting for these stories. After all was concluded, some unanswered mysteries, e.g., the “Friendlies”, still remain so hopefully these stories will continue following humans and their AI compatriots through further adventures in their universe.
The book, as the forward points out, is to tie up some loose ends from the previous four part series. The S Wars 1-4,I did not read, so some things took a bit of effort to understand.

That did not detract from the Retro War moving along at a fast clip, just some extra research on my part!!!

A very good novel, which ends well enough... but there were some hints of a possible postscript story...

Hmmm....
The storyline is great and fast paced. Everything is great except that I felt during the read that there were a little too many twists in the plot. Overall it was great, but if 6 stars were available it would not have qualified due to the (just my view) excess hurdles and too many timelines the heroes partook in!

After all that, the 5 stars are still very much deserved.
